Architecture

program Overview

Santa Rosa Junior College is offering (draft) a two-year associate’s of science degree in Architecture.  (Catalog Description:) This program is intended for students to pursue transfer to a 5-year professional or 4-year non-professional degree university level undergraduate program at UC, CSU, or private schools.  This program emphasizes coursework in spatial and architectural theories relating to design, visual communications, history, drawing, digital and physical model-making techniques, and presentation skills.  The architecture program emphasizes a studio -based design curriculum, students will develop portfolio of work.

What is architecture?

What Architecture courses do you offer?

ARCH 2.1 - Architectural History

In this course, students will study the development of architecture, settlements, and city planning from prehistory up to the Gothic period from diverse locations around the world. The study will also include discussions of social, cultural, and physical conditions that influenced the development of architecture.

ARCH 2.2-Architectural History II

In this course, students will study the development of architecture and city planning from the Gothic period to the 20th century from diverse locations around the world. The study will also include discussions of social, cultural, and physical conditions that influenced the development of architecture..

ARCH 2.3- Architectural History III

In this course, students will study the development of architecture and city planning from the 20th century to the present from diverse locations around the world. The study will also include discussions of social, cultural, and physical conditions that influenced the development of architecture.

ARCH 12 - Introduction to Environmental Design

Exploration of the work done in the design professions: architecture, landscape, and planning. Using case studies and environmental exploration, students will begin the process of articulating a personal design vocabulary.  This is a project-based course.

ARCH 52 - Visual Communications

In this project-based course, students will learn to use the techniques, tools, and methods of visual communication of architecture, with a focus on hand-drawing. The class will explore ways in which hand-drawn techniques are used to identify, communicate, and resolve design solutions for the built environment..

ARCH 25A Design Studio I

Students will learn fundamental concepts used in architectural design to create shapes, forms, and objects as solutions to design goals. The course emphasis will focus on the explorative creation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects to analyze and explain design theory principles.

ARCH 25B( Design Studio II

Students will create and define architectural space through the use of design elements and properties such as form, order, scale, color, and volumes. This project-based course will also explore principles used in site analysis, navigation, circulation, and wayfinding.

ARCH 26A Digital Models and Graphics I

Students will learn and utilize the computer modeling application, Rhinoceros 3D, for the creation of digital models and two-dimensional (2D) graphics generated from those models. Emphasis will be on the creation of three-dimensional (3D) forms and surfaces through the manipulation of 2D shapes, platonic primitives, and Boolean interaction of forms. Graphical images derived from student-created models will include orthographic views, parallel and perspective views, and images rendered with materials and lighting.

ARCH 60 - Digital Presentation Graphics

In this course, students will utilize image editing and page layout digital tools, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, to create digital presentation boards as typically used for architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture project presentations.

How much can I expect to earn?

Graduates will benefit from the opportunity to pursue a number of different entry-level positions in construction, more information can be found here with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Are classes offered online or in-person?

Classes are taught in person in the new Lindley Stem Center, on the Santa campus.  Design studios are located in the Lawrence Simons FAIA Innovation Center in Lindley.  Architecture is typically a studio-based education, in which students learn in a dedicated studio environment.

Where will in-person classes be taught?

Studios

  • Classes are taught in person in the new Lindley Stem Center, on the Santa campus.  Design studios are located in the Lawrence Simons FAIA Innovation Center in Lindley.  Architecture is typically a studio-based education, in which students learn in a dedicated studio environment.
  • Lawrence Simons, FAIA Innovation Center, Santa Rosa Junior College Architecture program offers a studio environment for students to work and store their projects outside of class time, during open studio hours.  This innovative approach allows the students to take advantage of a traditional studio environment outside of class time, during open studio hours.  Students who otherwise might not have the means for transportation or a private space to work on their projects have a safe space to do so, without needing to take large projects home with them.
